The Story.

Historical Background.

Grendel’s Mother is a central figure in the Old English epic Beowulf (composed between the 8th and 11th centuries CE, but set in the warrior culture of 6th-century Scandinavia). In the poem, she dwells in a watery lair and avenges the death of her son Grendel by attacking the mead-hall of King Hrothgar. While depicted as a monstrous creature, many scholars believe she may represent a distorted memory of real women who defied the male-dominated warrior society – perhaps a chieftain’s widow or an outlaw leader whose vengeance against rival clans was transformed by oral tradition into myth. Her story, though wrapped in supernatural imagery, reflects the era’s anxieties about motherhood, vengeance, and the dangerous power of those who refused to be erased.
