ETHER DRIFT

Their Voices Fade
Unseen, unheard – yet always present. A song of grief held in silence. He lost both parents too early, and their absence became a quiet echo inside him.
This is his way of remembering, and of letting go.

Lyrics:
Verse 1
In the quiet of my room, I hear your laughter
Echoes fade, like sunlight through the window shutter
Remember when we danced under the stars so bright?
Now just shadows, left behind, in the dark of night
Pre-chorus
Every whisper, every touch, feels like a dream
Memories warm, but now they're just a distant stream
Chorus
Their voices fade, but I still hear you calling
Memories hang like a shadow on the wall
Though time has passed, and miles apart we stand
I hold onto what we had, like a treasure, not a brand
Verse 2
I walk where we once walked, feel the ground beneath
Soft footprints now covered, by the cold, hard street
Those hands that held mine, now they’re just a memory
In my heart, they live on, like a secret, not a story
Pre-chorus
Every whisper, every touch, feels like a dream
Memories warm, but now they're just a distant stream
Chorus
Their voices fade, but I still hear you whisper
Memories linger, like a soft, sweet, summer breeze
Though time has healed, and space between us grows
I cherish what we were, like a keepsake, not a show
Chorus
Their voices fade, but I still see your smile
Memories linger, like a gentle, fading light
Though we may drift, and distance makes us cold
I keep your memory, like a precious, unspoken word
Story behind the song:
This track is about the grief of losing those who meant everything, far too soon. It is a song about absence–about voices that disappear, yet remain as a quiet echo in the heart. The lyrics reflect the memories, love, and longing that accompany us through life, and how, eventually, we can learn to let go.
For me, it is also a reflection on how losing my parents as a child shaped me. When you lose your foundation, your safety net, the brain often creates “another version” of yourself–a part without feelings meant to withstand the world. It is not wanted, but an instinctive shield against pain. At the same time, all the grief is locked inside this part, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot escape it. It has followed me through life as a quiet, persistent echo of what once was.
Writing Their Voices Fade was an attempt to confront that pain, to acknowledge it, and finally to let it go. As an adult, after undergoing treatment for PTSD, I can look back and say that chapter is over–but the memories, warmth, and voices of those I lost live on in the heart. The song thus becomes both a personal farewell and a way for others to recognize and relate to loss, longing, and the quiet echo of those we have lost.
The image accompanying the song emphasizes this: a man sits alone, facing the light from a window, while his parents emerge as memories–presence that is already absence. It is both a reflection on the emptiness that follows loss and a tribute to the love and connection that never disappear. In this way, the song is a meeting point between memory and absence, grief and peace. Had I created it before PTSD treatment, the image would likely have been of a boy and two younger figures–but it has followed me until I became ready and free from PTSD, which is why both I and my parents are older.
